Dance India Dance
Zee TV
Fri-Sat, 9:30 pm
Rating **1/2

What’s it about?Dance India Dance, yet another dance reality show that premiered last week, even has Salman Khan rooting for it. Present on the sets of the show as a guest judge, Khan was all praise for reality shows that help fulfill dreams of many youngsters. While we have had dance shows with couples, kids, oldies and teenagers in the past Dance India Dance will be a test for both dancers and choreographers. The winner will be presented the title of a dancing star, and he/she will be presented a golden hat called the Taqdeer Ki Topi by none other than Mithun Chakraborty, the maha-guru on the show. While each week will see the elimination of one contestant, Mithun will also select the best dancer of the week, who will win a gift hamper.

Who’s in it?After auditions conducted in various states, 18 contestants have been short-listed for the final round. The contestants have been divided into three groups under the leadership of choreographers, Remo D’Souza, Geeta Kapur and Terence Lewis. They train them every week according to the assigned theme. But the star of the show is none other than Mithun, who in his jazzy suits, gelled hair and funky broaches looks dapper.

What’s hot?Mithun-da brings the show alive with his charisma and energy. Unlike, most judges on other reality shows, he makes the contestants very comfortable and always has a word of advice for them. Like most of his fans, the contestants too refer to him as Prabhuji and it is a delight to watch this camaraderie on national television. The contestants too are extremely skilled and none of them have two left feet. It is pure magic to see Mithun shake a leg at the end of the show.

What’s not?The sets are tacky and the costumes worn by the contestants too loud and outdated. The format of the show doesn’t deserve any applause either, because it looks like a mix of previous shows. The choreographers on the show, who are referred to as India’s best every five minutes are not quite the best, really. The anchors of the show have a limited vocabulary. They use just two adjectives — excellent and outstanding.

Should you be watching it?For a Mithun fan, this is your chance to have the best glimpse of your superstar. For dance lovers, this is your chance to learn some cool moves. For the rest, the choice is yours.
