Ahmedabad A public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the title of the film Slumdog Millionaire came before the Gujarat High Court for hearing on Tuesday. The division bench of Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice Akil Kureshi are hearing the petition, which will continue on Wednesday as well.

In his submission, advocate CM Ankolekar, representing petitioner Meena Jagtap of NGO ‘Dastak’, pleaded that the title of the film was “vulgar, offensive and intended to defame” the country, and hence, needs to be changed.

The film, which has so far won 12 national and international film awards, is a British drama directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy.

Filmed in India, it tells the story of a young, uneducated man from the slums of Mumbai appearing on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. It was released in the UK on January 9 and in the US on January 23. In India, it was premiered in Mumbai on January 22.
