The story is completely Indian and there is every possible reason to call it an Indian film and an Indian victory. The whole star cast is Indian and the crew members are also from Bollywood. Even its co-director Loveleen Tandon is an Indian who helped Danny Boyle capture the spirit of Mumbai in a realistic and artistic manner. It is our victory.

The movie is all in all an Indian film. The star cast is Indian, the crew is Indian and the story is about what the great Indian culture represents: optimism. Moreover, the novel (Q&A), written by Vikas Swarup, on which the film is based is also an Indian. Slumdog has won Oscar in eight categories including Best Picture. The Indian cast have also bagged the Oscars with two of them going to AR Rahman alone. I still, however, want to say that it cannot be taken as an Indian victory since the movie is highlighting only one aspect of India, which is poverty. There is another side to India which is booming and going towards becoming a strong economic power.

It is by far an Indian film and an Indian victory. It is just that the movie has been directed by somebody who is not from India, but all the artists, its cast and crew are mostly Indian. When the Best Picture was announced it looked like India was there on stage in the form of AR Rahman, Anil Kapoor and others. Our artists like Gulzar and Resul Pookutty have all won Oscars. We have every reason to jump into celebrations

The movie in fact presents a story which has a universal appeal and cuts across all continents in its essence which portrays optimism and hope. Especially in times like these when the world has been struck by recession, the story of rags-to-riches gives hope. It also tells us that love and faith are values more important than money. Though the cast and crew is Indian, I would like to abstain from calling it an Indian film or victory. Anyhow it is a victory for Bollywood and Indian artists as they have now got recognition at this level. Some people have an objection to the title ‘Slumdog’ but the catch lies in what it is followed by- millionaire. The movie is in a way universal.
