Kolkata The Youth Congress membership drive began in the state with the party reducing its membership fees.

“We have given a special relaxation for West Bengal,” said S Taqui Ahmad, the public relations officer of Youth Congress in the state.

The membership fees charged in 143 of Bengal’s 294 assembly segments which get Central grants will be Rs 5 in place of the standard Rs 15.

Congress leader and official spokesperson of West Bengal Pradesh Congress, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, said: “We are having a youth membership drive after 34 years of CPM rule. We don’t want the fees to be a deterrent for those who want to join.”

Bengal is the 15th state where the youth membership drive has been started. Started by Rahul Gandhi on September 6, it will continue till September 30. The Lok Sabha returning officers based in each Lok Sabha constituency (42 for 42 Lok Sabha segments) have been deployed to initiate the drive.

After the drive is over, the Youth Congress elections will be held by January 30.

From each assembly segment, there will be 10 committee members and ten delegates. The 6,000 assembly level representatives will choose the Youth Congress leader through voting. “Rahul Gandhi will be visiting the state from September 14 to September 16 to boost the membership drive,” said Ahmad.
