Chandigarh A notorious car-borne snatchers’ gang was laid to rest by the UT police on Monday with the arrest of two youths. The accused, identified as Sudhir and Mustafa, committed around 10 snatchings in last two months at gunpoint. A Maruti car (PB65F 2006) was also recovered from the duo.

Sudhir, the son of a retired Sub-Inspector, has been remanded to police custody for a day while Mustafa has been sent to 14-days’ judicial remand.

As the police pat themselves on the back, it was the snatchers’ own folly that led to their downfall. Sources said the two had an altercation over the distribution of money after robbing two women late on Sunday evening.

Sudhir lost control of the car, which rammed into a road divider near Hallomajra. When the police reached the accident site to rescue the injured, they realised it was the same car as the one used in the crimes. The duo was arrested and rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, for treatment.

According to the police, the youths are drug addicts and were under the influence of drugs at the time of accident. “They could not even speak properly when we questioned them,” said a police officer. Both are habitual offenders with several cases of theft and NDPS registered against them.

Station House Officer of the Sector-34 police station, Inspector Sudershan Thakur, said: “We are looking for the other members of the gang and will nab the rest soon.”
