Sudhir, the son of a retired Sub-Inspector, has been remanded to police custody for a day while Mustafa has been sent to 14-days’ judicial remand.

As the police pat themselves on the back, it was the snatchers’ own folly that led to their downfall. Sources said the two had an altercation over the distribution of money after robbing two women late on Sunday evening.

Sudhir lost control of the car, which rammed into a road divider near Hallomajra. When the police reached the accident site to rescue the injured, they realised it was the same car as the one used in the crimes. The duo was arrested and rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, for treatment.

According to the police, the youths are drug addicts and were under the influence of drugs at the time of accident. “They could not even speak properly when we questioned them,” said a police officer. Both are habitual offenders with several cases of theft and NDPS registered against them.

Station House Officer of the Sector-34 police station, Inspector Sudershan Thakur, said: “We are looking for the other members of the gang and will nab the rest soon.”

December 11, 2008: A bag containing Rs 15,000 was snatched from a resident of Sector 37 at knifepoint. She was going to her office after lunch when the incident took place. The youths then shifted focus to Sector 48 where they snatched the purse of Munmun, a resident of Sector 66. The gang’s next victim was a woman in Sector 15, from whom they snatched Rs 500. The last victim of the day was an NRI, who had come with her relatives for shopping in the Sector-34 market. The youths grabbed the purse containing cash, ATM and credit cards, at knifepoint.
