Chandigarh The first-ever Chandigarh Social Science Congress kicked off at the Panjab University (PU) on Wednesday. The Congress was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of the Univeristy, Prof R C Sobti.

Sobti said that social reality has become more complex, multi-dimensional and prone to change. In this backdrop, the single dimensional approach in social science disciplines should pave the way for multi-disciplinary approaches in teaching and research.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof Sudesh Nangia, who was earlier associated with JNU, Delhi. She elaborated upon the multi-dimensionality of globalization. Historian and former Vice-Chancellor of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Prof J S Grewal, congratulated the University for organising the Congress and added that the Congress is the first step to bring various disciplines together, which will allow the study of mankind and environment in a holistic manner. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dean of University Instruction, Prof B S Brar.

The session was chaired by Professor Emeritus, Dept of Fine Arts, PU, Prof B N Goswamy and said that today there is a ‘flood of information but a famine of knowledge’.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Dean of Research, PU, Prof M R Khurana.
