The murders took place on the intervening night of February 6 and 7 in 2006. The accused, Pawandeep Singh, was accused of conspiring with Anil Tyagi and Ravikant Tyagi to kill his father, retired group captain T P Singh, mother Shibani and aunt Ajit Kaur. A family discord was cited as the motive behind the murders.
“The prosecution was backed by strong circumstantial evidence as the reports of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory and the DNA of the accused were enough to prove the case against them,” said public prosecutor Manu Kakkar. He said while Pawandeep later confessed to the crime, his brother supported the prosecution theory and said Pawandeep had strained relations with their parents.
According to the prosecution, Pawandeep, Anil and Ravikant had reached the city on February 6 around midnight. As soon as T P Singh opened the door, the accused attacked him and Ravikant fired three shots at him. The prosecution said Shibani was stabbed when she came out hearing the noise. Ajit Kaur was killed with a heavy flower vase.
Pawandeep had come to the city with an intention of committing robbery as he was aware of the fact that there would be around Rs 4 lakh in cash at home. He had promised the killers to share the booty.
