Faizabad The Ambedkar Nagar police arrested the son of former Bahujan Samaj Party legislator from Katehry and his two accomplices on Wednesday on charges of double murder.

According to SN Gupta, in-charge of the Special Operation Group team, Anand Patel, son of former legislator Ram Dev Patel and his accomplices — Surendra Yadav and Ramesh Varma — allegedly shot dead the Ameer Chand Jaiswal jeweller and decamped with a bag of jewellery on Tuesday. Patel, armed with .76 bore Italian-made automatic pistol, had shot Jaiswal from a point-blank range. His accomplices, armed with countrymade pistols, were providing cover to him. As soon as they tried to leave the spot, a local youth, Vikas Singh, gave chase. Patel fired another shot at Singh, leaving him dead.

Gupta said they succeeded in solving this case due to a case of cellphone snatching, which occurred few days ago in the area. The police immediately put that cellphone on surveillance. “We found some talks discussing this robbery in coded language and conducted half a dozen raids.

“In our last raid conducted at Khajurdeeh village, we nabbed these three youths,” said Gupta. “From their hideout, we have recovered jewellery, the Italian pistol used in murder and countrymade weapons,” he added.
