Sonia steps in, asks Sheila, Gehlot to make list again

New Delhi, November 03 The run up to the Assembly elections gathered further heat with Congress president Sonia Gandhi stepping in late Monday evening and directing for a ‘reconsideration’ of candidates finalised so far for 53 seats by the state unit.

According to sources, Gandhi was reportedly “worried” over the choice of candidates for at least six constituencies finalised by the election screening committee. These six were reportedly considered “weak” to take on top BJP leaders such as chief ministerial candidate Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Dr Harsh Vardhan and Jagdish Mukhi among others.

Gandhi, sources said, has asked Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Ashok Gehlot to re-draw the list. DPCC chief J P Aggarwal, a key figure in the selection of candidates, was not invited for the meeting, Congress insiders said. This assumes importance in the wake of Aggarwal and Dikshit being at loggerheads over the choice of 17 candidates yet to be finalised by the party’s state unit.

Meanwhile, names of retired IPS officer Amod Kanth, Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken, and Alka Lamba are now doing the rounds to beef up Congress’s chances in three of these seats.

Maken is reportedly being pitted against Malhotra in Greater Kailash — also in the fray, sources say, is present MLA Subhash Chopra who was earlier fielded for Kalkaji. Insiders said the party is also considering replacing chosen candidate Dipika Khullar by either Arvinder Singh Lovely or Dr A K Walia against Harsh Vardhan in Krishna Nagar.

While the state Congress had earlier decided to pitch former MCD councillor Jeetinder Kochar against Malhotra, with Maken’s name now doing the rounds, the political scene is expected to gather heat as Maken would be a contender for the chief minister’s position if the Congress returns to power. With Vijay Jolly expected to contest against Sheila Dikshit from New Delhi constituency, Amod Kanth’s name was discussed in today’s meeting to replace Tek Chand Sharma in Sangam Vihar to cash in on the Bihari migrant vote in the unauthorised colony now up for regularisation, sources said.

In Janakpuri, the state Congress unit had recommended Deepak Arora, known to be a close associate of former MP Rajesh Khanna. But he is now considered a weak candidate against BJP’s Jagdish Mukhi. No decision has yet been taken but former MCD councillor Sanjay Puri’s name is also doing the rounds.

In Hari Nagar, BJP MLA Harsharan Singh Balli’s stronghold, the party is considering the names of either former NSUI president Alka Lamba or former Congress MLA O P Wadhwa.

NAZI DEVELOPMENT WITH BJP? by DEVELOPMENT? on 04 Nov 2008

Sir, after the involvement of Sadhvi Pragya Thakur it has become evident, that most of us Hindu's won't even spit on a party like the BJP. This party is out to destroy our Hindu names in the entire world.

UPA is Doomed by Sharat on 04 Nov 2008

Congress is going to be decimated in Delhi Legislative Elections for it's misrule of last 4 years......BJP is coming back and will develop New Delhi like Narendra Modi has led development in Gujarat....

DIRT LOOKS GOOD IN DUSTBINS. by Sach of life on 04 Nov 2008

BJP is a threat to the civilized world, as its followers are either destroying Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Dalit relations by injecting communal poision. We Hindu's do not want to be represented by Advani likes, because we do not want that they should destroy Churches or Mosques or rape or kill mother and sister likes in our Hindu names.

Anti Hindu UPA is threat to nation; by Mohit Mahajan on 04 Nov 2008

UPA's anti-Hindu stance will back fire in the comming assembly and Loksabha elections. UPA is a threat to nation with it's ministers and allies openly hailing the terrorists who kill Hindus and protecting the terrorists and even calling MC Sharma as Desh Drohi. I doubt if Cong will even 10-15 seats. What diff does it make to change the candidates when cong has lost even before contesting. Cong shud accept it's defeat and let the BJP rule by defaut at least we can save some money.

Delhi and General election by Nanda on 04 Nov 2008

WE HINDU'S ARE HINDU'S AND WE DO NOT WANT TO FOLLOW ON AL-QAIDA FOOTSTEPS. by DHARAMNAL on 04 Nov 2008

Sir, the incident related to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, has tarnished the image of the BJP. BJP is now linked with presumed terrorists . This is the party whose leaders accepted bribes also for asking questions in the Parliament. BJP is surrounded by terrorist likes from Bajrang dal etc. BJP has clearly tarnished and blotted our Hindu image and this cannot be accepted by any decent Hindu around the world.Malhotra is considered as a good person, but he must distance himself from this Al-Qaida like elements related to RSS/VHP/Bajrang dal etc.We ahr Hindu's but not Al-Qaida.

Asembly elections-changes in Congress List by Parminder Singh on 04 Nov 2008

Dear Sir, it is no use putting up defeated candidates like Mr. Wadhwa from Hari Nagar constituency. He can be seen only during election days. Despite many problems being faced by residents of colonies covered in the Constituency, no Congress leader ever holds any meeting, jalsa, dharna, protest to expouse their cause. One does not know which Congress leader should be approached to narrate problems for resolution by MCD/ Delhi Admn. Residents of the colonies want that the local MLA should be under pressure to perform by opposition, despite losing election. But it is not so. Local congresssmen are demoralised as they are ignored in selection of candidates for MCD, MLA/ MP elections. Unless this trend changes, it is RIP for Congress in this Constituency. Best- try Alka Lamba, a young women who has energy and time.

Sheila Dikshit's government by Nadeem Akhlaq on 04 Nov 2008

If the election is fought based on the development of Delhi then no body can defeat Sheila Dikshit. Delhi has witnessed the all round development in the last 10 years. The large no. of fly overs, Metro, extension of roads, good quality of buses for Delhites and a very improved network of transport system is a great success. The high cost of living is due to the global economy and Sheila Deekshit has nothing to do with this. Sheila tried to reach to all the people from poor to rich to listen to them. Sheila has tried her best to extend the govt.' s facilities to every needy. If the people don't choose Sheila again then it will be just very unfortunate.

To see the quality of cooked rice, it is enough to pick just one from the heap and taste it. So goes an old adage. It is not the candidates that matter but that they are part of UPA .The UPA is a threat to the nation and I hope the voters realise it more now than at anytime before.

Madam's choice by Gpal on 04 Nov 2008
