Kolkata Congress president Sonia Gandhi will attend a day-long session of the Eastern regional conference of the AICC to celebrate the 125th anniversary of foundation of the Congress on September 25.

The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) will also discuss the “misrule of the Left Front government for the last 35 years” at the conference.

The programme will be attended by more that 12,000 delegates from six eastern Indian states like Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar, Andaman and Nicobar Island and West Bengal.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, spokesperson of the WBPCC, said in the backdrop of the changing political scenario this conference has become the most important political exercise for the Congress. He said, in the last 35 years, at least 10,000 party supporters were killed.

Before formation of the Trinamool Congress in 1998, the Congress was the only Opposition party in the state.

According to sources, before the next Assembly elections the party will try to build an independent image. Among 12,000 delegates, more than 4,000 delegates will be from Bengal.

“In Bengal, the Trinamool is our ally, and there are indications that the Left Front will be uprooted from power next year. In this situation party strategy for the next Assembly polls will be discussed,” a party source said.

Roy said that the AICC has decided to hold such conferences at five regions in the country. Finally, the national level conference will be held in Mumbai.

The Kolkata conference will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

“We have differences with the Trinamool on certain issues. The conference will discuss how the party can launch a separate campaign against the misrule of the Left,” said a senior Congress leader.
