Chandigarh Residents in the city may get a relief from water woes as Mayor Kamlesh is contemplating to provide regular water connections to all, including the slums and the colonies.

The proposal to develop a new system for providing water connections will also be mooted to facilitate the process of acquiring water connections.

Kamlesh said, “The proposal will impact a large number of residents. We want water connections for all. A better system of bill recovery should also be developed to enable no loss to the MC exchequer.”

Kamlesh laid to rest all rumours of an increase in water tariff as she said the Congress would not allow an increase in the tariff or imposition of any new taxes.

“We hope to streamline water supply further. The aim of having 24 hours’ water supply will be fulfilled. When the people in colonies can be given regular electricity connections by the UT Administration, where is the harm in providing water connections,” said Kamlesh.

She reasoned: “This would increase the income of the corporation as people would pay bills. Many residents have approached us stating they are ready to pay the bills if regular water connections are provided.”

Interestingly, the Municipal Corporation has pending water bills to the tune of nearly Rs 10 crore from different organisations.

In a recent House Meet, the MC had decided to issue notices to the defaulters and in case of failure to pay, disconnect the connections.

MC councillors skip monthly review meet
The Municipal Corporation (MC) meeting for the councillors and officials to review area-wise development work turned out to be a futile affair on Thursday with barely 15 per cent councillors turning up. Of the 36 member House, a thin number were present including a few nominated councillors, BSP councillors and some from the BJP. While the Congress councillors were missing, Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria was also absent from the meet.
On the condition of community centres, BSP councillor Jatinder Bhatia said: “The Architecture department is taking too long to pass the designs. The community centres need to be revamped at the earliest. We discussed a number of problems,” he said.
Councillor Dr A P Sanwaria called for an open debate on development in the city. Encroachments are rampant and need to be controlled, added Sanwaria.
