The BMC, is hoping to complete the garden-spread over an area of 24,000 sq metre, by the end of the year. The highlight of the pattern will be the central circle modelled on the Ashoka Chakra. Surrounding this Chakra will be a graphic wall showcasing the Swadeshi movement of the states and union territories.
Additional municipal commissioner, RA Rajeev said, “These walls will have a section devoted to each state and union territory which will tell their story of the Swadeshi movement.”
There will also be six-metre wide circular pathway with mural walls reflecting country’s cultural identity. The garden will also have an amphitheater.
Rajeev added, “Our aim is to make this Swadeshi Udhyan truly Swadeshi in nature. We therefore want to plant trees which originate in India. Even trees like coconut although found in abundance here are not Indian, so our effort will be to locate the homegrown trees.”
The civic body is also simultaneously working on a list of more than 20 gardens across the city, revamp of Five garden, Dadar, Nehru garden, setting up an Estuarine park and another Botanical garden in the eastern suburbs. Rajeev said that work on all these gardens will begin soon.
