Lucknow The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is set to increase its fleet of the swanky blue and pink coloured air-conditioned (AC) and non-AC low floor buses plying on the city roads.

Despite being introduced in the state capital for over three months now, the buses have failed to generate expected revenue and continue to face losses.

“The move is aimed at covering our losses. Less occupancy is also due to less frequency and non-availability of the buses. So, we are hopeful the number of passengers will increase with these additional buses,” said a senior UPSRTC official. The buses are expected to start operating by February 15. “We are working on the modalities of the project,” said Chaman Sharma, Public Relation Officer of UPSRTC.

Two AC and four non-AC buses (Rs 65 lakh for AC and Rs 55 lakh for non-AC) will be introduced on the present routes. At present, one AC and non-AC bus ply on route number 33 (Engineering College to Airport) and 22 (Munshipulia to Alambagh). Apart from the regular routes, the additional buses will also ply on route number 11 (Chinhat to SGPGI).

At present, a non-AC bus generates revenue of around Rs 24 per km as against the expected amount of around Rs 37. Similarly, an AC bus earns around Rs 20 per km against the expected earning of around Rs 40. Advertisements displayed on these buses add to the revenue by Rs 7 to 10 per km.
