“If the trials are successful, the service would be introduced across the major trains in the country. We have given a proposal to the railway board for installing the service in 200 trains,” said Nirav Kumar Dave, managing director, Technosat Pvt Ltd, the company which is carrying out the project on behalf of the Indian Railway.
“The Indian railway has asked the company to carry out the trials on the Mumbai-Ahemdabad route,” said S S Gupta, chief spokesperson,Western Railway. The Mumbai-Ahemdabad route is regarded as one of the busiest.
The entire system work will work on wi-fi technology. “The system works using wi-fi. The passengers using the service have to enter their username, the PNR number and any government identification to use the internet services,” added Dave.
Currently, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Canada, Italy and Germany offer internet services in trains using wi-fi technology.
When asked about how secure the connection would be, Dave said, “We have got the technical approval from the railway in this regard. We also have a strong firewall to avoid such cases.” However, the financial aspect of internet surfing is yet to be worked out by the Indian railway. “The commercial department and the railway board has to take a decision in this matter. We are merely providing the services,” added Dave.
