Kanpur, January 11 Anti-Mayawati protests by Samajwadi Party (SP) over manhandling of party leaders recently and the Value Added Tax (VAT) issue turned violent in Kanpur and Etawah, when local SP workers burnt down two UPSRTC buses on Friday.

Kanpur police has registered a case against over 12 members of the Mulayam Singh Yadav Youth Brigade, including the district president Pradip Tiwari, at the Kalyanpur police station.

SP youth brigade members, led by Pradip Tiwari and Ashok Dubey, gathered at crossing number 9 on GT Road under the Kalyanpur police station to burn Chief Minister Mayawati’s effigy. At 12 noon, protestors stopped traffic and blocked GT Road, after which, Mayawati’s effigy was put into flames.

Irked supporters also pelted stones on a UPSRTC bus (UP93 E 5290) at the Banda Depot. After dragging the passengers out of the bus, the bus was put on fire.

In Datauli village of the Etawah too, SP supporters stopped a roadways bus and later put it on fire. Though no one was injured in the incident, huge police force has been deployed in the area.

At Kanpur, senior administrative and police officers rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. After half-an-hour, three fire-fighting vehicles managed to control the fire. Talking to The Indian Express, DM Alok Kumar confirmed that the protestors have been identified as members of the Mulayam Singh Youth Brigade. “The administration will not tolerate such disturbances which risk the lives of innocent people. Strict action will be taken against the guilty.” He said that the administration was not informed about the effigy-burning programme.

SSP Anand Swaroop said, “Police were conducting raids to nab the guilty persons.” IG S N Singh, ADM Shakuntala Gautam and other officers were also present on the spot.
