Mumbai The Bombay High Court on Monday appointed the Additional Sessions Judge M L Tahilyani to conduct the trial in Mumbai terror attack case.

The trial which will be against four arrested accused including the lone arrested terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab is likely to be conducted inside the Arthur Road Jail.

Tahilyani, who is presently posted in the High Court as the Registrar (Inspection), was appointed by the High Court after the State Law and Judiciary Department had requested for a special judge in the 26/11 trial. Among the most prominent cases of Judge Tahilyani was the murder case of music baron Gulshan Kumar, who was killed in 1997, in which the accused Abdul Rauf Merchant was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Judge Tahilyani, a native of Gondia district, completed his law from Nagupur. After practising for seven years as a lawyer in Nagpur, he was appointed as a magistrate and in 2000 was promoted to a sessions judge. He has a thorough understanding of both criminal and civil laws.

He stays with his wife in South Mumbai and has a daughter who is also a practicing lawyer at the High Court.
