Vadodara, January 6 It was a special reunion for the students of the 1974 batch of Convent of Jesus and Mary High School on Sunday, in the wake of their 30-year get-together at the school in January 2004. At that time, the alumni had formed a volunteer group CJM-74 and had vouched to stay in touch with each other, coming forward to pitch for one another during times of difficulty, and for doing everything within their means to help spread education among the under privileged.

The batch consisted of 125 students divided into two sections, but only 99 could make contact. Out of that 99, a total of 63 had met in 2004 at a two-day function. The batch mates are settled all over the world, the US, the UK, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Fiji and different parts of India.

CJM-74 also managed to locate eight teachers who had taught them and had now retired. The students honoured them at the 2004 function for their efforts in training and teaching them and making them what they were all now.

Hector Patel, marine logistics specific services provider in Abu Dhabi, said, “A total of 20 batch mates met on Sunday at a resort in Dabhoi and later visited the Wadhwana bird sanctuary. In 2004, we had decided that CJM-74 would meet again after four years when most of us would either be approaching or would have crossed the age of 50.” He said during school days many of them might not have spoken a word with each other but now they are like a big family. Another alumni, Joseph Soares from the UAE, said that due to Internet they were now able to locate and reunite with their batch-mates even after so many years. Patel said, “Though the numbers are much less compared to 2004, we have stuck to our commitment of keeping in touch with one another.” He said they have decided to raise fund and help the under privileged get education.

Namita Patel, city-based CJM-74 member, said, “We can just call anybody from our batch and ask for help. That is our motive. Be it financial, social or any other help, the members will always come forward to pitch in with his/her support. All CJM-74 members settled in Baroda meet once a month.”
