Surat, February 6 Two youths succumbed to injuries and their friend was critically injured when a speeding State Transport bus rammed their motorcycle near Bid village of Mahuva taluka in Surat district, on Wednesday morning. Angry villagers torched the bus and beat the driver, before handing him over to the police.

Police said, Nimesh Patel (22), Prakash Patel (24) and Subhash Patel (30), all residents of Bid village in Mahuva taluka were on their way to work at a factory in Palsana taluka when the mishap occurred. Near the Bid village bus stand crossing, Nimesh, who was riding the motorcycle, immediately stopped it when he saw the speeding bus. But the bus driver failed to steer away and rammed into the motorbike.

Some youths who were waiting at the bus stop shouted, following which bus driver Mohan Chauhan, a resident Modassa taluka, stopped the bus.

The victims were rushed to the government hospital in Mahuva, where Nimesh and Prakash were declared brought dead by the doctors on arrival, while Subhash is still under critical condition and has been shifted to the Sardar Samarak Hospital in Bardoli.

Angry villagers soon torched the bus and started beating the driver. Mahuva Police rushed to the spot with fire officials and soon brought the situation under control.

Another bus from the Mahuva Bus Depot was rushed to the spot to ferry the stranded passengers to their destinations.

Mahuva Sub-inspector V G Rathod said, “We have arrested the bus driver and an investigation has begun. The bus was travelling from Dharampur to Mandvi. The incident happened at 7.00 am on Wednesday. Bodies of Nimesh and Prakash were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem. The bus was in full speed and as there was no passenger to get down at Bid village, the driver didn’t slow down near the crossing. After spotting the motorcycle he tried to steer away, but failed and rammed into the motorcycle, killing the two and severely injuring the third.”
