Ludhiana Highlighting the high incidence of reckless driving on the city roads, a youth driving a car in an inebriated condition allegedly hit a physically-challenged man near the Children’s Traffic Park last night. The victim, riding his tricycle, wounded his head and pelvis.

The bystanders said the boy was driving his Swift car on the wrong side of the road at a high speed around 10 pm. “After hitting the man, he went on to hit a board of a nursing home and another vehicle. The car was also badly damaged in the accident,” they said.

The accident took place in front of Shah Nursing Home near the Children’s Traffic Park in Model Town.

“The boy appeared drunk and was not in a condition to drive,” said a resident of the area, Dr BS Shah.

The injured man, Bachchan Singh whose legs are amputated, was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. The Model Town police said no case has been registered as the victim did not want to lodge a formal complaint.

Drunken driving is one of the least reported offences in the city for want of breath analysers and adequate staff with the traffic police.

It is learnt that the traffic police have only four breath analysers.

On the other hand, the cases of drunk driving go unnoticed as the traffic police have a strength of nearly 225 traffic policemen while the city requires more than 700 personnel to ensure the smooth flow traffic on city roads.
