The bystanders said the boy was driving his Swift car on the wrong side of the road at a high speed around 10 pm. “After hitting the man, he went on to hit a board of a nursing home and another vehicle. The car was also badly damaged in the accident,” they said.

The accident took place in front of Shah Nursing Home near the Children’s Traffic Park in Model Town.

“The boy appeared drunk and was not in a condition to drive,” said a resident of the area, Dr BS Shah.

The injured man, Bachchan Singh whose legs are amputated, was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. The Model Town police said no case has been registered as the victim did not want to lodge a formal complaint.

Drunken driving is one of the least reported offences in the city for want of breath analysers and adequate staff with the traffic police.

It is learnt that the traffic police have only four breath analysers.
