It's not the first time that this designer-duo has brought sport on to their drawing boards. Brothers Nikhil and Shantanu Mehra have in the past made cricketers walk down the ramp, styled sport-centric collections and are avid sportspersons themselves. While Shantanu has played competitive tennis, Nikhil tees off with golf. So news of them designing the team outfits for Indian Cricket League (ICL) comes as little surprise. The League roped in the two to design the team uniforms for Ahmedabad Rockets and Lahore Badshahs. The cricket gears for the earlier teams were put together by their contemporary Manish Arora.

“Just like any of our collections that we do, for this project as well there was a fair amount of research that we undertook,” informs Shantanu who along with brother Nikhil has dressed up Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Leander Peas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Manoj Bajpai amongst others.

Having travelled extensively to Lahore, the brothers were keen to portray the warrior spirit through their designs. “We worked on the Pathan look and were much inspired by the sword. So the jersey has sharp lines as you’ll notice,” he says. Given a 20-day deadline, the two breezed through with styles that played up the sporty “attitude.” As the designer puts across: “See what happened in Australia. Cricket is no longer a gentleman’s game. It’s all about aggression now and we wanted to play it up through what we design.”

When it came to the Ahmedabad Rockets, Shantanu and Nikhil knew that colour was of importance. “Gujarat is all about colour and flamboyance. We took that concept forward with the use of flaming colours like red and saffron and offset it with black. Also the rockets in the team name was interpreted in our way through flames and firework styles,” Shantanu explains some more. And yes, the brand of brothers admit that their signature style runs through the outfits. “We will be taking the ICL linkup further as there are bigger things in store,” they tell us. Off the greens, the two are not taking to the ramp at the India Fashion Week. “We are majorly into expansion plans with our stores coming up in Ludhiana, Hyderabad...so the hands are a tad full,” wraps up Shantanu.
