In the first match, Sporting Veterans Goa led by former India captain Bruno Coutinho, deservingly prevailed over Century Rayon 3-0, while in the following match FCI (Kolkata) got past defending champions KSA Red by 5-4 via the penalty shoot out.
Playing delightful football, Sporting Veterans dominated play but could not breach the Century Rayon defence often enough, which was manned admirably by Remy Fernandes and Salim Khwaja. In the first half, a powerful header by Derrick Pereira was saved by Century Rayon goalkeeper Denis Creado and then Pascoal Pereira’s shot was saved of the goal line by Remy.
In the second session, first Bruno Coutinho hit the upright and then Derick Pereira’s shot rebounded off the post. In the tie breaker, Xavier Colaco, Alfred Fernandes and Inacia Viegas were on the target for Sporting Veteran’s. For Century Rayon Remy Fernandes and Santosh hit wide, while Uday Pandey’s shot was saved by Bharat Morje.
Before going in the tie-breaker, Douglas D’sena went from the right flank solo and entered the box but goalkeeper Mohammad Qudeer Shaikh of FCI Kolkata came out and cleared the ball. In the second try by KSA Red, Chandrakant Poojari failed to connect Vijay Thapa’s cross right in front of the goal, whereby missing two scoring opportunities by KSA Red.
FCI (Kolkata) scored their penalties from Alok Mukherjee, Gurmeet Singh, R Rana, Uttam Ghosh and Sudip Chakraborty, while Swaroop Das and Bikash Panji failed to score. For KSA Red, Suresh Mendon, Santosh Kashyap, Suvas Patil, Jaya Salian scored the goals, while Vijay Thapa, Navin Kotian, Douglas D’sena could not score.
