Surat, February 22 The jawans of State Reserve Police's (SRP) group no. 10 and 11 in Surat city made a representation to District Collector Dilip Raval on Friday and accused their group commandant R J Sawani of torturing them mentally and physically.

The group of jawans at Wav village in Kamrej taluka told Raval that Savani, who had suspended 80 constables in the last four years, forced them to till land, sell vegetables and fire-crackers, besides engaging them in his personal work.

The suspended police personnel of SRP group no. 10 and 11 gathered outside the Surat District Collector's office in the morning. They said that anyone who objected to Savani’s ways faced a departmental inquiry. They handed over a memorandum to the District Collector, demanding disciplinary action against Sawani.

They threatened to go on a fast along with their family members if justice was not meted out to them within seven days. The police constables alleged that 80 constables and head constables have been suspended during Sawani's four-year tenure at Kamrej.

They alleged that Sawani employed them for his personal work like asking them to sell vegetables, which he brought from his native place in the markets of Surat and Kamrej. A head constable, Bichubhai Khuman who objected to this, was suspended from his job.

Khuman said, "The officer had ordered a departmental inquiry against me after he came to know that I had taken steps against him. SRP group no. 10 police constable Dharmendra Sisodiya, fed up with torture, committed suicide. The deceased's father Dhiru Sisodiya had even written letters to the government about this. Sawani even forced me to vacate the staff quarter allotted to me."

Khuman had earlier complaint against Sawani and had even submitted documents showing corruption by the group commandant, but no action was taken.

Another constable Arjunsinh Jhala said, "I am also a victim of Sawani’s terror. He had organised a Lok Dayro and had collected Rs 8.94 lakh on May 17, 2005. When another policeman Ramesh Khawadia applied for the details about the amount through Right to Information Act, Sawani initiated a departmental inquiry against him and suspended him from the job. On the orders of Sawani, Rs 250 is deducted from our salary for savings without our permission.
