Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) authorities, it seems, have finally woken up from their slumber over issues related to leakages in minor and sub-minor canals. They have issued a notice to a Vadodara-based contractor, Vadodara Orbit Artisans Private Limited, over leakages in a minor canal in the SSNNL command area at Jharwani village of Nanod taluka in Narmada district.
Newsline had carried a report about Bhumaliya villagers not getting irrigation water in June 2008, due to leaking minor and sub minor canals. Bhumaliya lies in Nanod taluka and gets water from the Kothi minor canal. Another village, Jhariya, also gets irrigation water from the same minor canal.
The report had also highlighted the plight of farmers who get inadequate water supply during the summers in this entire region under the SSNNL command area, due to the leaking canal system.
More than 18.45 lakh hectares in 15 districts of Gujarat are expected to get irrigation water after the completion of the project. But according to official figures, only 19 per cent of the work is complete.
SSNNL Managing Director N V Shah said further investigation on the situation of minor canals is underway. “The contractor has been asked to rectify the mistake within a month, failing which the amount of loss incurred by SSNNL will be deducted from the final payment,” he said. He added: “We are taking up this issue very seriously, and covering each branch canal and sub minor canal division, gradually. If similar faults are found in other minor and sub-minor canals, we will take strict action against the contractors.”
