Kolkata After spending 13 years as the principal of St Xavier’s College, Rev Fr P C Mathew, S.J. was appointed as the director of its second campus situated at the EM Bypass on Friday.

While the college is celebrating its 150th anniversary, Fr Mathew said that the change in position made no difference to him.

“I am a Jesuist and whether I am a principal or a director makes no difference to me. I do what is given to me with all my heart and commitment,” said Fr Mathew.

Succeeding Fr Mathew will be Rev Fr Felix Raj, S.J. who will take over as the principal from February 2.

At present, Fr Raj is the vice-principal of the commerce section of the college.

Rev Fr Dominic Savio, S.J. will replace Fr Raj and Rev Fr Jimmy Keepuram S.J. will become the vice-principal of the Arts and Science department. It was during Mathew's tenure that St Xavier’s became the first autonomous college of the state and was also declared as “Centre with Potential for Excellence” by the University Grants Commission. Mathew said, “We are going to concentrate on the development of research at the second campus and hopefully one day it will become a university.”
