Chandigarh The ongoing star night at the Panjab University had to be called off abruptly following a ruckus at the venue on Thursday. Dean Student Welfare Professor Naval Kishore, after receiving a request from the police, immediately suspended the function.

The event had been organised as part of the three-day fest of University Institute of Applied Management Sciences. According to sources, chaos prevailed after all the seats were filled and individuals carrying passes were not let in.

In all, 900 passes for the function, being held at the gymnasium hall, were distributed while a crowd of 2,000 turned up for the programme. The police officers, on finding it difficult to handle the maddening crowd, approached the university authorities to stop the function. Professor A K Saijhpal, Director UIAMS, said: “We were having a peaceful function but when we were told that people standing outside were creating trouble, we stopped the function that was nearing completion.” Meanwhile, the mob is learnt to have broken the gate and torn the banners.

Abhishek, a student, asked: “I have a pass but I am not being allowed in. If such functions cannot be handled by the authorities, why are they organised?” Authorities at the campus said confusion arose after individuals reached the venue with scanned duplicate passes.
