Things are looking bright for Shahana Goswami with awards galore, rave reviews, more releases and a boyfriend in the form of Milind Soman

Everyone is talking about Shahana Goswami these days.
But I conveniently choose to underplay my achievements, I’m not good with compliments. That’s what keeps me grounded.

Two consecutive awards for your performance in Rock On!! Making it to the top league?
When I signed the film I wasn’t even thinking of being nominated. I’m glad that the part that I played stood out. But I have a long way to go, though I feel welcomed into the industry.

How much has life changed after Rock On!!?
It has, professionally. I am more self-assured and confident now. I have learnt to concentrate on my career and think about it in a constructive manner.

You are also dating now?
Oh well. I am. I’m tired of denying it. I am dating Milind Soman. Things are looking good at the moment.

Have expectations risen for Firaaq?
Firaaq has a lot of expectations riding on it anyway. For starters, it is Nandita Das’ first film. For me it is an honour just to be a part of it. But now audience will look at me more carefully.

You play the role of a mehendiwali in Firaaq.
The movie explores the psychological impact communal riots have on a person and a society at large. I play the role of Munira who senses a complete loss of every kind of possession after the riots.

You bagged this role before you signed on for Rock On!!!. Were you looking at a particular genre of cinema then?
I was looking for good work. I do not like to compartmentalise cinema as art and mainstream. Nandita Das contacted me after she had seen my performance in Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota. I auditioned for the role and soon things fell into place.

The movie has a line up of veteran actors.
I share screen-space with Amruta Subhash and Nowaz, both senior actors. Since I am not trained in acting it was fortunate for me to feed off my co-actor.

The movie is appreciated all over. Were you present at any of the screenings?
I was at the Dubai Film Festival. The concept of the film is not alien to any part of the world. Everyone who watched it took back a part of it and left a part of their views.

Are you looking at more solo leads now?
I am not one of those actors who sign a solo lead to establish herself. I enjoy doing roles that have character.

Are you fashion conscious now?
I would love to wear a pair of jeans and tee everywhere. But it is only fair to realise that your well-wishers wish to see you in a certain way. Delhi-based designer Sonam Dubal is working on my look.

What’s next?
Jashn releases in April. Tera Kya Hoga Johnny will release later in the year. Meanwhile, reading more scripts, and enjoying life.
