SPCA Secretary Dr J C Khanna said, “For the past few days, we were getting constant complaints about illegal wildlife trade in the Crawford Market area. On Monday, at 2.30 pm four SPCA inspectors and one field officer went to the spot and found four men selling the animals in cages. However, when we reached there, the vendors fled and we couldn’t file a police case.”
Khanna said that the parrot fledglings were found dumped in a plastic bag and five birds were severely injured.
The SPCA officials said the animals were being sold openly in the market in unhygienic conditions. The animals have now been taken to the SPCA hospital for treatment. Khanna said that the birds would later be released at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) while the turtles and squirrels would be handed over to the forest department.
