Mumbai A week after the Mumbai Police Crime Branch submitted the chargesheet but remained silent on its earlier claim over the Indian Mujahideen (IM) men’s involvement in the 7/11 serial train blasts, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Saturday finally sought and secured custody of one of the prime accused, Mohammed Sadiq Israr Sheikh (32), in the case.

Seeking Sadiq’s custody on the ground of his alleged involvement in the serial train blasts on July 11, 2006 which killed over 187 people and injured over 700 people, acting ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi said, “The custody is sought to confirm if Sadiq has any involvement in the case.”

The Special MCOCA Court on Saturday granted Sadiq’s custody to the ATS till March 5. Indian Mujhahideen cadre Mohammed Saif arrested by the Delhi Police had apparently during his interrogation ascertained Sadiq’s role in the 7/11 blasts. According to the application moved before the court, Saif had told the interrogators that Sadiq, along with his elder brother Dr Shahnawaz, Abu Rashid Iqlak Ahmed Sheikh, Aatif Ameen and Ameen’s associate Mohammed Sajid, had hatched the conspiracy and was “actively involved” in the serial blasts.

However, there is no mention of this claim in the chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch last week against the 21 arrested men. But, in an appended document pertaining to sanctions required from the state Home Department for prosecuting the accused under different charges, the Crime Branch states that the IM members “have continued unlawful activities of serious crime i.e. bomb blasts at Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Delhi and Mumbai”.

The ATS on November 30, 2006 had filed a 10,000- page chargesheet against 13 accused — Kamal Ahamed Ansari, Dr Tanvir Ahmed Ansari, Mohd Faisal Shaikh, Ehtesham Siddiqui, Mohammad Majid Shafi, Shaikh Alam Shaikh, Mohd Sajid Ansari, Abdul Wahid Shaikh, Muzzammil Shaikh, Soheil Mehmood Shaikh, Zamir Ahmad Shaikh, Naveed Hussain Khan and Asif Khan Junaid. The 15 wanted accused are Azam Chima, Aslam, Hafizulla, Saabir, Abu Baker, Kasam Ali, Aminu Jaan, Ehsanullah, Abu Hasan—¿all Pakistani nationals, while rest include Rizwan Daware, Mohd Sahil Shaikh, Abdul Razak, Sohail Shaikh, Hafi Jubair and Abdul Rahman. Another two accused are dead.
