Minister for Urban Development Ashok Bhattacharya said the Railways had no business in building the houses, as it would be illegal.
“The Railways Ministry has become Trinamool Congress’s property. But we cannot understand how the railways could build houses there, as they had got the land from us for building a railway terminal,” said the minister.
“If the railways do not set up a terminal there, then they will have to return the land to us. We appeal to the railways that if they wanted to contribute to the building of houses they are most welcome but they will have to hand over the money to Kolkata Municipal Corporation,” Bhattacharya added.
According to the state government, the dwelling units will be built under the Basic Service for Urban Poor scheme of the Union government.

Now the dwellers of fire ravaged slum at Ultadanga are seized in tne cross fire of claim and counter claims of opposition and ruling patries regarding building homes for them.If the political parties continue to unseemly vie with each other, obviously with an eye to vote bank,it's not wrong to apprehend the poor victims would ultimately end up in getting nothing at all.
Why were the people living in slums in the first place? Why didnt either state govt or didi build them houses earlier???
