Chandigarh, February 5 After clinching a last-minute deal on the Chandigarh International Airport, Haryana is now looking beyond it. It has invited the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to draw out a technical road map for developing aviation infrastructure at various places in the state. A team of AAI is presently in Haryana visiting different locations where civil aviation infrastructure, if not new airports, can be developed in the state.

The AAI team, accompanied by officials of the state government, visited Pinjore yesterday. Senior official sources say Haryana has proposed setting up of a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) base in the state where big and small aircraft can make use of MRO facilities at locations closer to New Delhi.

“The existing MRO facilities are largely working over capacity or at far off places. There’s enough room for such facility in the region,’’ an official said. The state government is also looking for developing dedicated aviation infrastructure for helicopter landing, facilities for charter aircrafts, parking base and for business jet operations at locations other than at existing bigger airports, sources said. “Movement of charter planes and smaller business aircrafts is an increasing trend, especially with industrial houses. However, this movement is limited owing to air traffic constraints at regular airports. A synergy of aviation infrastructure will make a difference,’’ the official said.

Haryana has offered its five airstrips to the AAI for use. “The AAI team will visit Karnal, Hisar, Bhiwani and Narnaul,’’ an official said. Once the technical feasibility is done, the economic study and private partnership plans will be put in place, he added. The state government is also looking for a state-of-the-art simulator training institute where trained pilots can periodically upgrade their skills as per the laid norms.

The airstrips in Haryana are presently not in use, barring the one at the Pinjore aviation club. “Some of the facilities we propose do not require longer airstrips. Some can be expanded depending upon the requirement of use,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Haryana seems to be going slow on the proposed Chandigarh International Airport at Mohali. Ever since the state pitched in as an equal partner, along with Punjab, in the airport project, Haryana has shown no initiative to take the project further. Its co-partner Punjab is undertaking modalities for land acquisition in Mohali.
