State Higher and Medical Education Minister Rajesh Tope on Friday talked about the action plan in Global Conference on ayurveda arranged by Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVU). Raghunandan Sharma, chairman of central council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) inaugurated the conference.

Tope said he would coordinate a high power committee meeting in February to discuss various aspects of ayurveda that will help draft a comprehensive action plan. “The state government will invite experts in the field, educationists and researchers for the meeting,” he said.

The minister however showed concern over the present situation of the ayurveda education. “The state produces 3200 ayurveda graduates every year. But most of them practice allopathy. They are allowed to do the allopathic practice, but over dependence on allopathy has been pushing ayurveda treatment backwards,” he said.

“China’s share in the global production of herbal products is 90 per cent while our country’s share is only 5 to 6 per cent. Concentrated efforts are needed to increase the share,” he said.

Sharma said the CCIM has decided to revamp the curriculum of ayurveda in the country. “We have convened a meeting from February 17 to 21 at Bangalore, where experts will take a review of the present course and design the new one,” he said.
