With over 633 petitions submitted to the West Bengal Human Rights Commission in the last one year, members of the WBHRC now admit that the cases are piling up and that they need to be recommended to the state government.

Speaking at a seminar in the city on Friday, Justice Pinaki Ghosh said that in the last two years over five thousand petitions were lying pending with them. The members of the All India Legal Aid Forum, meanwhile, demanded that the cases pending with the commission be recommended to the state government.Joydeep Mukherjee, general secretary, All India Legal Aid Forum said: “The WBHRC has no mandatory powers and we believe that they should be given more powers so that cases can be solved fast. We want more cases to be forwarded so that the state government can take action,” said Mukherjee.

He also sought an early resolution of the issue pertaining to having a chairman for the WBHRC. N C Seal, acting chairman, WBHRC, said that the issue (of having a chairman for the WBHRC) was in the hands of the government. “It is the government which needs to recommend a chairman,” said Seal. Advocate General Balai Rai pointed out that Human Rights Day celebrated on December 10 is ‘not about law but the essence of human existence’. Minister of State for Law and Judicial Affairs Nisit Adhikary and S N Roy, member of WBHRC were also present at the seminar.
