Ahmedabad The process to constitute Gujarat Educational Innovations Commission (GEIC) has commenced. The state government will soon appoint a search committee consisting of three eminent educationists, who will nominate the executive chairman as well as four other members to the GEIC.

Hasmukh Adhia, Principal Secretary (Education), Gujarat, said, “The announcement of the search committee will come as soon as the Governor signs the GEIC Bill and the Act is notified.”

It must be noted here that the Gujarat

Assembly had passed the GEIC Bill on February 19, which mandates the government to

establish a commission to promote conception, experimentation and implementation of educational innovations in the state.

“The commission will look into the educational systems propagated by five national leaders: Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Swami Vivekanand, Shri Aurobindo, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi,” said Adhia. To incorporate these into mainstream education will be the commission’s aim, he added.

The commission, with financial support from the government, will also establish educational institutions with the aforementioned goals. It can also recognise or de-recognise any institution for implementing educational innovations recommended by it.

Apart from curriculum development and pedagogy, GEIC is mandated to suggest reforms for complete overhaul of the existing evaluation system, which has led to many suicides by children in recent times.

Also, recognising the absence of a ‘sports culture’ in the state, indicated by Gujarat’s abysmal performance at national-level competitions, the GEIC will suggest measures to expand the domain of education to physical education, yoga, NCC, NSS and Scouts & Guides. Another notable feature under the GEIC Act is the scheme for fellowships.
