Lucknow Within the next four years, after becoming self-sufficient, UP will start exporting power to other states.

The state government announced this in the Assembly on Thursday. Replying to a question during the Question Hour, state Energy Minister Ram Veer Upadhayaya said: “Within the next four years, several new power generation projects will be completed and the state will export around 1,000 mw to other states.”

He added that an investment of Rs 52,000 crore is estimated to strengthen the transmission and distribution network in the state during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, ending March 2012.

In reply to a supplementary raised by Pramod Tewari of the Congress, Upadhayaya said the government has also sent proposals to the Centre for setting up nuclear plants in the state.

He added that Chief Minister Mayawati has already written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard. Upadhayaya, however, parried Tewari’s question when the Congress leader wanted to know if those opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal had opted for nuke power.

The minister also announced that the state government will provide maximum electricity during examinations, beginning March 1.

While replying to another question, state Agriculture minister Lakshmi Naryan Chowdhary said the government was promoting bio and green fertilisers in the state to preserve the fertility of the soil. He, however, rejected the demand of the Opposition for subsidy in DAP and urea fertilisers, saying that no other state has provided such a facility so far.
