State to honour outstanding SHGs

Pune State Women and Child Development Minister Madan Patil on Tuesday announced that the state government would honour outstanding women self-help groups with special prizes from this year. “The awards will be distributed on International Women’s Day on March 8,” he said.

Patil was in the city to attend an awards function oranised by Manasi Mahila Unnati Kendra. “This will be the first year of the awards that will be a unique initiative of the state government,” he said.

He said his department was mulling about proposing the state government to reserve 10 per cent space for women self-help groups while building shopping complexes in the cities. “We will make a proposal in this regard to the Urban Development Ministry to ask the municipal corporations in the state to reserve 10 per cent space for the self-help groups,” he said. “The state government is also pushing for constructing malls exclusively for the self-help groups,” said Patil. “So far two malls, one each at Gadchiroli and Bhandara have been established and as and when we get space, we will establish more in the other parts of the state,” he said. Patil gave away Stree Shakti Awards at the function. Minister for Social Security, National Solidarity, Senior Citizens and Reform Institutions of Mauritius Sheilabai Bappoo was also present on the occasion. “Vacoas phoenix, the city I represent has a memorandum of understanding with Pune and I am here to make this relation more stronger,” she said. Speaking to reporters after the function, she said a special request would be made to the mayor of Pune for sending a group of artistes to Mauritius for May 1 Maharashtra Day functions there. “I will also request the mayor to send experts to Vacoas phoenix to draw a landscape for a garden to be created in the city,” she said. President of Manasi Mahila Unnati Kendra Deepti Chaudhary welcomed the guests.
