Kolkata, February 7 The West Bengal health and family welfare department has commissioned a study to prepare a blue print for the proper treatment of patients in more than 13,000 hospitals across the state.

State Information Technology Minister Debesh Das said the state had commissioned the study almost a month back which is likely to be completed within two months.

While the total number of beds in the state is almost 92,000, more than 78,000 of them are in the urban areas. The number of patients served per bed in rural areas is 4,666 and in urban it is 296. The average, however, is 931 patients per bed.

The state had planned 7,000 common service centres in the next three years. It will provide government-to-citizens services.

The study will prepare a database for an institutional healthcare delivery system in the state which will include total number of beds, patients served per bed, performance of individual doctors and nurses and the status of the stock of medicines and instruments in hospitals. The health department will also prepare a database to show a list of patients seeking admission in the hospitals.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister Surya Kanta Mishra said: "We have also planned to establish a common service centre at each panchayat headquarter."

"That will definitely improve some aspects of the healthcare scenario in the state," Mishra said.

"It is possible to develop the database, though it is huge. We will start working on the software development once the survey reports are out," Das said. A software will also be developed to monitor performances of doctors and nurses .
