“Law and order is a state subject and it is the state which decides how it can be maintained. The CRPF was there because we wanted it and for that we got Centre’s permission. The RPF has no right to do what it has done at Lalgarh,” DGP Bhupinder Singh said in Kolkata.
He added that he has taken the matter up with state Home Secretary Samar Ghosh. Ghosh said, “I have taken the matter up with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.”
The DGP said that the police had arrested four PCAPA members including Sushil Mahato, who is considered one of its front-ranking leaders, from the rally. Singh informed that about 15,000-20,000 people gathered at the rally. “Most of those who attended came from outside. There were hardly any local people,” said the DGP.
