Kolkata The state government has opposed the Centre’s plan to allocate coal blocks in a competitive bidding, saying it is not proper for the state to bid along with private companies.

However, the state government is actively pursuing the allotment for nine coal blocks to meet the requirement of industries.

Sabyasachi Sen, state industry secretary, said in the past two years, the allotment of coal blocks to the state government has been zero.

“Is it proper for a state government to go for bidding for coal blocks along with private companies,” he said, saying other states should also take a similar stand.

State officials, however, admitted that in the five coal blocks the government already had, it has not been able to start mining.

Sen said the coal blocks being demanded by the state government are Kunur, Sunuri, Lalganag, Nanchan, Dharma, Kabitirtha, Doecha-Pachami, Dewanganj and Barjora south.
