Boy, they sure make teenagers a lot different these days. For one, they aren’t always doing just one thing. Take for example this 19-year-old. From the looks of it, he seems to be just another kid growing up around the neighbourhood. That is until Gurveer Singh takes a deep breath and lists out his achievements back-to-back which includes the latest - a call for Zee TV’s upcoming dance reality show ‘Dance India Dance’. “I made through all the auditions held in Chandigarh and in Delhi. Now I am waiting for the go-ahead for Mumbai where the show will roll out,” tells Singh who admits to nurturing a “passion” for dance for many years now. His style is Bhangra which he choreographs to his own sequences. “I learnt Bhangra in school and have been participating in competitions and stage shows ever since. Though I don’t need a reason to perform. I can dance anywhere, anytime and in front of anyone,” laughs the youngster. That’s how it happened for the Zee auditions. “I had given up dancing three years back after my father died. He was working at the Department of Animal Husbandry in Government of Haryana and after his demise, I was given a job in the department as a clerk,” informs the teenager who took a break, studied through correspondence and stuck to office hours. Until one day his mother informed him about the dance auditions for the Zee show in the city. “I just decided to walk in and give it a try. I hadn’t even prepared anything,” reminisces Gurveer who impressed everyone with his performance and was soon on his way to Delhi. “Though dancing is not the only thing I do,” Gurveer springs a surprise and that’s when he takes another deep breath and pulls out more achievements from his resume. “I am a prolific theatre artist in the city having worked in plays with Dr Sahib Singh and Dr Gurcharan Singh. In Bollywood I made a debut as Kareena Kapoor’s brother ‘Vikram’ in the film ‘Jab We Met’,” says Gurveer who is fondly known as ‘Veer’ in the city’s actors’ fraternity. He’s even acted in two Punjabi films. “As of now I am looking to win the dance show so that I can get a foothold in Mumbai,” tells Gurveer who feels lucky to have supportive family and colleagues at work. “I want to be an actor and currently I am exploring work in advertising too,” he shares his next plan of action.
