The visit by the three Congress leaders — state unit’s working presidents Pradip Bhattacharjee and Subrata Mukherjee, and CLP leader Manas Bhuniya — to Banerjee’s residence has not gone down well with district Congress leaders, who are miffed at being ignored.
“Pranab Mukherjee is the state Congress president and he had announced that the district leadership will select our candidates for civic polls and play a key role in seat-sharing talks with the Trinamool. Now, it is being said that everything regarding the civic elections will be settled by a state-level committee,” said Nadia district Congress president Shankar Singh. Singh, along with other district presidents of the party, will raise the issue during Tuesday’s meeting. “We will request the leadership to clear our party’s stand on crucial issues like selecting candidates and sharing seats with the Trinamool Congress,” he said.
“We are helpless. What can we do other than follow the high command?” a senior state Congress leader said.
