Bhattacharya is a man with a mission. Although he does not earn much, his heart goes out to the poor and the needy. He was moved by an incident which perhaps changed his life. Here’s an anecdote:

“Please take all the blood I have in my body. But arrange for a brain scan for my son. He has a tumour. I cannot afford his treatment,” asked a poor father while donating blood in a blood donation camp. His son is suffering from brain tumour. Everybody present in the camp started eying each other. But, fortunately, there was one noble soul present who took the poor father along with him and arranged for everything required for his son’s treatment.

Although a rarity, but such things do happen...

Bhattacharya runs a health unit called “Subharthi” where any needy person can get his ECG done at the lowest rate in the city. Here ECG is done at Rs 15, nebulizer is available for Rs 25 and oxygen cylinder at Rs 150 while in the city market all these cost much more. This apart, he also carries out an awareness campaign on several diseases in his locality.

“I feel that these kind of work are my responsibility. I am not here for looking after my family only. I also want to look after the poor who do not have any place to go and ask for help. After helping them out, with whatever I can, I can feed my family without difficulty,” says a beaming Bhattacharya.

“I also contribute money to an orphanage on Shyampukur Road. A smile on the face of an orphan makes me feel very happy. And, believe me, that happiness is priceless,” says Bhattacharya.

Above all, for quality education to the underprivileged students, especially among the slum-dwellers in his locality, Bhattacharya provides all the books required in the syllabus to around 125 students. In this noble cause he is helped by

the youths of his locality who also chip in.

“Helping the poor but meritorious students was a decision taken by our local club. Through this noble mission we hope to change the society for the better,” says Bhattacharya.

He believes in the ideology that to make the society a better place to live in one has to be a part of the betterment process.
