The deceased — G N Vinay — was a Class XII student of Kalka Public School in Alaknanda. His friends said they are completely clueless about any possible reason, for he was the class topper, and was an IIT aspirant.
Police officers said the boy left a suicide note that said he was depressed because “my preparation is not up to the mark and it is frustrating for me. Nobody is responsible for my death.”
A police officer said Vinay had Physics practical examinations on Tuesday but did not turn up for the tests. “His Physics teacher called up his father in Dehradun, who then rang up Gulmohar Hostel caretaker, Sher Singh,” the officer said. Singh said he got the call at 8.30 am and went to Vinay’s room (107) — it was locked from inside. After knocking in vain, “I broke it down and found his body hanging from the fan,” the hostel caretaker said.
Vinay’s friend Maruti Patel said, “He was really into his studies; he took the IIT entrance coaching class from FIIT-JEE in our school itself and had cleared the recent mock test.” Vinay’s father Dr R Jai Prakash works with ONGC and stays in Dehradun with the rest of the family. He reached Delhi today.
‘Exams not only reason for living on the edge’
Abdul Mabood, director of NGO Snehi, which runs an examination help line, said: “From the 600-plus suicidal cases we have dealt with, I can say there’s never one single reason. Exams may be a trigger but it’s not the only reason. The feeling of being helpless, hopeless, and purposeless are the factors that, together, sometimes push people to the edge.”
