Nayak Adak (19), a first-year student of Calcutta Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Allied Health Sciences in Uluberia, consumed pesticides at his home in Tamluk in East Midnapore.
A complaint of ragging has been lodged at Uluberia police station in Howrah district. The in-charge of the college, Rabindra Debnath, said they were not aware of the incident since it did not take place inside the campus.
“The parents of the student have not complained to the college authorities verbally or in writing. The incident did not occur on the college premises. Moreover, the students have said that there have been no cases of ragging in the college premises,” A K Biswas, the head of anti-ragging committee of the college, told The Indian Express.
It has been alleged that Adak was taken by four of his seniors to an undisclosed place in Uluberia where they asked him to slash his wrists. The incident occurred on September 5 after which the student left for his home in Tamluk. When he reached home, Adak told his parents about the incident. However, late on Wednesday night he consumed pesticides.
According to the college authorities, Adak’s parents had demanded return of the fees of the student twelve days ago.
