Ludhiana Braving the chill, many schoolchildren pulled themselves out of warm quilts early on Friday to get ready for school despite the fog and cold. Dense blanket of fog and mist has made visibility almost nil thereby putting the life of children at risk.

Yugesh Kumar, a school van driver, said, “It takes almost double the time to drop children to school. With visibility almost zero in the early morning, it is a Herculean task to drive on the city roads.”

It is not only the children who stand the inclement weather; their parents too find it knotty to send their wards to schools under such circumstances.

Rajni Verma, mother of a school-going child, said, “My daughter leaves for school at 7.45 am. I feel insecure while sending her to the school due to dense fog. At 8.30 am, I confirm the safe landing of my daughter to the school from her van driver.”

While the mother of two schoolchildren, Nonika Kumar said, “The dreary weather is keeping us on toes. As the sun has disappeared for the last few days, I remain scared till the time my kids are not back home. The district administration should order late opening of schools or declare holidays.”

Sumer Singh Gurjar, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, he said, “No one has approached me seeking rescheduled timings of schools. I will take a decision about it only if anyone approaches me.”

The schools in Delhi and Chandigarh have been closed down till January 11 due to cold weather. A group of parents said, “The district administration should also close down schools due to the cold wave.”
