Vadodara, December 31 In an attempt to register their protest against M S University (MSU) authorities on the last day of 2007, students of the Faculty of Fine Arts today burnt a copy of the report submitted by the varsity appointed four-member committee on the alleged ‘obscene’ art row. They also protested the suspension of Prof Shivaji Panikkar from the department of art history and aesthetics.

Around 70 students gathered at the faculty ground and set on fire a copy of the 40-page report submitted to the MSU Syndicate. They further raised slogans against the authorities for their lax stand against the May 9 invasion by BJP leader Niraj Jain during examination.

Students said protest was a means to tell the authorities that they would not accept the report.

Dean Prof Deepak Kannal said he was unaware of the incident. “I was busy elsewhere and when I came; I heard something was there. I tried to get seek details but didn’t get proper information,” he said.

The committee, which was led by senate member Dr Prakash Shah after Prof Syed Maswood left for sabbatical leaves and vacated the convener’s post, had submitted the report to MSU Vice-Chancellor on August 23 who presented it before the Syndicate the next day. On December 29, the panel served a notice on Prof Iftikhar Ahmed from the department of history in the faculty of arts, asking him to reply in five days. He was charged with indiscipline, instigating students and forming an illegal organisation.
