Patiala “Economic meltdown is ruling the world and we are passing through a very exciting and challenging phase as never before. The need of the hour is to dwell on the existing capitalist and socialist models, both of which have not yielded intended results and draw out a new model suiting the financial needs and requirements of our country. Academicians, scholars and students of economics and management can perform this job in a better way,” said Finance Minister of Punjab, Manpreet Singh Badal, on the first day of the two-day national seminar on ‘Making Markets Happen’.

The seminar is being organised by the Punjabi University’s School of Management Studies.

Badal said that the spirit of discipline and nationhood, coupled with a sense of dignity is needed to help the country progress.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Jaspal Singh, advocated the cause of a ‘balanced economy’ than a ‘mixed economy’ where there was minimum difference between ‘affluence and starvation’. “I regret the approach of treating ‘cheats’ like Ramalingam Raju as celebrity and small thieves as criminals,” he said.

Union Home Secretary, Jarnail Singh was also present. Head of School of Management Studies, A S Chawla, said, “We should focus on the current economic scenario by emphasising on issues like entrepreneurship, trading in global economy, impact of foreign investment and role of government in promoting economic growth.”
