Kolkata Tension prevailed in one of the state-run medical colleges and hospital when some students gheraoed its authorities this afternoon.

The director and the head of the department of IPGMER at SSKM Hospital were gheraoed for almost an hour by students, who were demanding immediate recruitment of professors in the physical medicine department. They withdrew only after the authorities promised to give them a hearing.

According to the students, the posts of assistant professor and lecturer have been lying vacant for the last 15 years and no initiative has been taken to fill them.

The students said the demonstrator also left the department without any intimation. They alleged that the Masters courses in physiotherapy discipline is also yet to start.

“We are looking into the matter. We have heard about the demands of the students and would be sorting it out,” said the director of IPGMER, Pradip Mitra.
