The students said the administration has hiked fees without any notice, imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for carrying a mobile phone in class, and is charging parking fee from students.

The protest was sparked after a final year MBA student was recently asked to attend college even after he presented a medical certificate for ill health. In another incident, the management asked a student to present a death certificate when he missed classes after his father passed away.

“As per the rules, 85 per cent attendance is must, which is unique to this university. And if a student does not have the required attendance, he is asked to pay a penalty of Rs 80,000,” Utkarsh (name changed), a first year MBA student, said. “Also, we are asked to present death certificates if we take leave in case of a death in the family.”

Final year MBA student Shikha (name changed) said: “Most of us live outside Gurgaon. We get our own vehicles as it is difficult, especially for girls, to travel without a proper transport system in the city. It is irrational to charge Rs 20 as parking fee from students.” This fee is not charged once in a day, a student must pay it “as many times as he comes to the campus”.

According to the students, the management has opened a barber shop inside the campus and takes students with long hair there for a haircut at their expense. “We have to pay for the hair cut if our teachers feel we have long hair,” a student said. “Also, we must pay the suddenly hiked fee to take examinations.”

A student Rohan said: “They are imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 if a student is found with a mobile fine inside the classroom. We are doing a professional course; we have to call various people. Where do we keep our cell phones without any lockers in the campus?”

When asked, the institute management said they are looking into the matter.
