Subsequently, as per the decision which was taken by the university’s standing committee, students of CIE will now be eligible for admission into its colleges on the basis of their predicted grades.
Saying that this facilitates the students’ pathway to the university smoothly, former CIE South Asia Manager William Bickerdike said: “Students following the Cambridge programme will be delighted that they can now base their applications to Mumbai University on their predicted grades. This will save a great deal of time for those making and receiving the applications.”
Further explaining, current CIE South Asia Manager Ian Chambers said that the CIE conducts two exams — one in June and the other in November.
Earlier, students taking the final exam in June had to wait till August for the results before they could seek admission into the university or its affiliated colleges.
“But subsequent to the clarification, grades given to the students in the mock exams (prior to the final exam) which are conducted by the schools themselves will be accepted,” said Chambers. This, said Chambers, solves the issue of difference in timing between the June exam results which are declared in August and the university admissions which happen prior to that.
The decision will certainly be of immense benefit considering the fact that the number of schools opting for the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is also showing an upward graph in the city. 2007 figures revealed that the number of centres where the University of Cambridge International Examinations or CIE IGCSE qualification takes place went up to 63 in Mumbai last year. This was in keeping with the national statistics which indicate that India is among the fastest growing markets with over 20 per cent rise in school enrolments over 2006.
