Students, senior citizen among seven suicides reported in 24 hrs

New Delhi, March 8 Seven persons, including a lawyer and a journalism student, committed suicide in the Capital in the last 24 hours.

In the first incident, 22-year-old Manish Kumar hanged himself at his rented accommodation in Model Town on Friday evening. From Bihar, he was reportedly studying journalism from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan and was staying with his sister Shweta, who is doing her graduation from IP College, here in Delhi. He did not leave any suicide note behind. Police officers said they could not establish reasons behind the suicide. His family has been informed.

In the second incident, a student of ITI Ghaziabad, Yashpal (20), hanged himself at his PNT telecom colony home in Janakpuri on Friday around 11.50 pm. His family’s financial condition had not been good ever since his father’s death. His mother is reportedly a fourth-grade employee. He is survived by his mother and two younger sisters. Subhash Chander (42) hanged himself at his Bindapur home on Friday around 12.30 pm. He was reportedly unemployed and had financial problems. He left a suicide note, in which he said sorry to his family members for not taking care of them because of his poor financial condition. He used to sell artificial jewellery earlier.

In the third incident, one Dharmender (35) hanged himself at his Paschim Puri home in Madipur this morning. He had done LLB and had practiced for sometime in Tis Hazari but was not pursing his profession at present. He was an alcoholic and gambled. He also reportedly beat up his wife regularly. She reportedly left home 15 days ago to go to her parents’ home. He left a suicide note in which he mentioned that he was under pressure from borrowers from whom he had taken loans.

Elsewhere, a 65-year-old retired DESU official, Gopal Grover, hanged himself at his Sidharth Basti home in south Delhi. His wife was reportedly ill and his children didn’t live with him. He had been depressed for the last few days, ending his life today around 10.45 am. His is survived by two sons and a daughter. No suicide note was recovered.

Sixteen-year-old Hari Narayan hanged himself at his Khajoori Khas home today around 2.30 pm. He had left studies after failing in Class XI and was depressed. A 25-year-old domestic help hanged himself in a Hauz Khas park this afternoon. Sujan Singh was reportedly depressed as he was suffering from tuberculosis. He reportedly worked in the Safdarjung Enclave area. The police received a call around 1.30 am about a man found hanging from a tree.
